PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: FLAMINGO SOCIAL CLUB
Meet Project: Flamingo Social Club, the project that was influential to the start of Rae Rockwell Studio. Flamingo Social Club is a short-term vacation rental near Joshua Tree, CA, adored for its color, comfort and bold creativity.
The space was inspired by the colors of the desert sky, the natural brush on the property and the town in which it sits on, Flamingo Heights… So naturally, there’s many shades of pink.
Not only was this Rae’s first project, but it was also a blank slate and she had room to play creatively. Before, the house was dark, didn't utilize the space well, and was generally outdated… it hadn’t been touched since the 70s ... and as vintage-lovers, we promise this wasn't in a good way. The yellowing bathroom tile, faux wood paneling and pinstripe wallpaper had to go. She and her partner joke the only thing they kept from the original home was a unicorn mug. They started demo and knocked out a wall in both the guest and primary bedrooms to make our outdoor patio accessible from sliding doors in each room. She added arches to the bedroom hallway and opened up the entire house with light and airy paint. She then got to the part where it was time to really hone in on the concept and theme of the house, now that she had the bones in place, “I wanted to give guests a memorable experience: a space they could interact with, a place to relax, a place to explore and an experience they could only get at Flamingo Social Club. I wanted to make a colorful, eclectic vacation property where guests would leave inspired.”
BEFORE
The space features murals by Cacti Society, artful details and a custom made deserted boat dock for sunset viewing and stargazing. Decor-wise, the interior features some of our favorite brands - Mitzi, Drop It Modern, and Joybird. Throughout the home are details fit for any season: a mid-century modern indoor fireplace and jacuzzi for the colder days, a cowboy tub, an outdoor firepit and specially curated reads about the California desert.
As 2022 will be Flamingo Social Club’s third year hosting guests, Rae plans to continue to add features and updates to the property to keep guests’ experience fresh and exciting. Follow Flamingo Social Club on Instagram to stay up on the property’s updates!
